Prayers of a Young Poet

My forthcoming book of Rilke translations, Prayers of a Young Poet, will appear with Paraclete Press in October, 2012.  It will be the first translation of the poems which Rilke wrote in 1899, upon returning to Germany from his first sojourn in Russia.  He initially called them simply The Prayers, and only later published them, together with two shorter sections, under the title The Book of Hours.  In the original form as it will appear in this volume, Rilke includes short narrative descriptions--as if journal entries--which locate the context in which many of the poems were written.  The literary conceit he uses presumes the poems were the work of a Russian Orthodox monk who was also a painter of icons.
