Prayers of a Young Poet

My new translation of poems from Rainer Maria Rilke's Book of Hours (Part I) is entitled Prayers of a Young Poet (rev'd paperback edition, 2016). It is the first full translation of the original Rilke wrote in 1899 his return to Germany from his first journey to Russia. He initially called them simply The Prayers, and only later published them, together with two shorter sections, under the title The Book of Hours. In the original form as it will appear in this volume, Rilke includes short narrative descriptions--as if journal entries--which locate the context in which many of the poems were written. The literary conceit he uses presumes the poems were the work of a Russian Orthodox monk who was also a painter of icons.
